Sunman, Indiana came into being along the Big Four Railroad in 1856. Dubbed for either Thomas W. Sunman, or John Sunman the town grew into a popular trading village for area residents. Thomas W. Sunman was a prominent area resident and a shareholder in the railroad. John Sunman helped the man who platted the town, James Vanness.
The town has been expanding its horizons with the addition of the Metz industrial park, south of town on State Road 101. 96 acres, it is zoned I-1 and has existing infrastructure ready for business. Existing industries in or near Sunman, Indiana include Baylor Trucking, Krueger-Maddux (greenhouses), Franks (a packaging business, and McPhearson’s Printing.
Sunman, Indiana boasts the Sunman Community Park, which has sports fields and a community building which is available to rent for events. The town is located at the eastern edge of Ripley County. Indiana State Road 101 bisects the town on a north/south heading, two and a half miles from its intersection with Indiana State Road 46 north of the town and three miles from Indiana State Road 48 to the south. The town lies 2.7 miles south of Interstate 74. The Indiana and Ohio Railroad connects the town by rail to Indianapolis and Cincinnati.
