Patriot, Indiana was laid out in 1820 by Elisha Wade and James Herrick. It was named Troy, but this name was later changed to Patriot. The town grew during the first years, but was devastated by six major floods.
Indiana State Road 156 passes through downtown Patriot and hugs the Ohio River on its way to Indiana State Road 56 to the east. Indiana State Road 250 ends in downtown Patriot at and intersection with Indiana State Road 156.
