Lying along the north bank of the Ohio River, Jefferson County, Indiana is one of Indiana’s oldest counties. It is also one of the prettiest. The southern hills overlook the majestic Ohio River as it wends its way to the Mississippi River. Madison Indiana, the largest town and the county seat, is loaded with history and character.

It is bounded by Switzerland, Clark, Scott, Jennings, Ripley Counties.
Bound on the south and east by the Ohio River.

There are four incorporated towns in Jefferson County, Indiana. These are are Brooksburg, Dupont, Hanover, and Madison. Unincorporated towns are Canaan, Kent and Deputy. Townships include Graham, Hanover, Lancaster, Madison, Milton, Monroe, Republican, Saluda, Shelby and Smyrna. Jefferson County is adjacent to Six Indiana Counties. These are Ripley County (north), Switzerland County (east), Carroll County, Clark County (southwest), Scott County (west) and Jennings County (northwest). Across the Ohio River the Kentucky counties are Carroll County and Trimble County. The Madison-Milton Bridge spans the Ohio River, connecting it with Milton, Kentucky via US 421.

Eight state highways crisscross Jefferson. U.S. Route 421 is the main north south conduit, connecting Jefferson County with Kentucky to the south and Greensburg, Indiana to the north. Indiana State Road 3 cuts through the western part of the county on its route to northern Indiana. Indiana State Road 7 begins in Madison, Indiana and runs northwest to North Vernon, Indiana and Columbus, Indiana. Indiana State Road 56 connects Jefferson County, Indiana to I-65 west of the county and Lawrenceburg, Indiana to the east. Indiana State Road 62 crosses the county on its route from the Wabash River way to the west to its terminus on State Route 262 about a half mile south of US 50. Indiana State Road 250 connects Jefferson County to Brownstown, Indiana. Indiana State Road 256 is an alternate route to I-65 to the west.

Ohio River Scenic Byway

Jefferson County is the home of one Indiana State Park, Clifty Falls, and one National Wildlife Refuge, Big Oaks.

Morgan’s Raid, the longest raid of the Civil War, crossed Jefferson County as the Confederate general made his way across Indiana and Ohio.
