Switzerland County is bounded on the west by Jefferson County, on the northwest by Ripley County, on the north by Ohio County and on the east and south by the Ohio River.
Switzerland County was formed two years before Indiana became a state, in 1814 and was named for the native land of many of its early inhabitants, Switzerland. The first commercial wineries in the United States were located here, and the county considers itself the birthplace of commercial winemaking in America. This heritage is celebrated yearly during the Swiss Wine Festival in late August.
Switzerland County has two incorporated towns, Vevay and Patriot. There are six townships, Cotton, Craig, Jefferson, Pleasant, Posey and York.
Switzerland County is bounded on the east by the Ohio River, on the north by Ohio and Ripley County and on the west by Jefferson County. Indiana State Road 56 crosses the county on an north/south axis, connecting Vevay with Rising Sun to the northeast and Madison to the west. Indiana State Road 129 creates a link with Versailles to the north and Indiana State Road 250 crosses Switzerland County from east to west, linking Indiana State Roads 62 and Indiana State Road 156, which hugs the Ohio River from Patriot to Rising Sun
