Batesville History
Batesville Indiana was founded in 1853. The town was platted at a point where the Napoleon/Brookville Road intersected the newly constructed Upper Mississippi Railroad. A farm owned by Teunis Amack had a well which was needed to replenish the water supply for the steam locomotives which plied the route.
Batesville eventually became the home of many furniture factories which were supplied by the numerous area sawmills which cut the trees into lumber used in the factories. These factories included the American Furniture Company (Romwebers), the Union Furniture Company, Greeman’s and the Batesville Coffin Company. The latter was purchased by George Hillenbrand and became the nationally known Batesville Casket Company still producing coffins today.
Additional manufacturers located in Batesville, Indiana are, Hill-Rom, a major hospital manufacturer, Batesville Tool and Die, Med-Mizer and Heartwood Manufacturing.
